Best Time to Visit the Sahara Desert in Morocco (Month by Month)

October to April is the sweet spot, but each month has its own character. Weigh weather, crowds and prices month by month to pick the season that fits your trip.

Best time to visit the Sahara desert in Morocco? The short answer for most travelers is October to April. But within that window each month has its own personality — and the right choice depends on whether you want perfect light for photography, the fewest crowds, or the lowest prices. Here is the honest month-by-month picture from our team, who live at the edge of the dunes.

October to April: the reliable sweet spot

Through these months, daytime temperatures around M'Hamid and Erg Chigaga sit comfortably between 20°C and 30°C — warm enough for camel trekking, cool enough for long walks on the dunes. Nights are crisp rather than punishing, and the skies stay clear for stargazing. This is the window in which most of our desert treks run.

October and November: the autumn sweet spot

Autumn is many guides' favourite season. The summer heat has gone, the light turns low and golden, and the sandstorm risk is close to zero. November is quiet while still beautiful — fewer camps, earlier sunsets, and some of the richest golden hours of the year for photography.

December to February: cold nights, empty dunes

Winter days are genuinely pleasant — 18 to 22°C, perfect for walking — but nights can drop to 0–5°C, so warm layers are essential. The reward is the quietest, clearest desert of the year: fewer travelers, cleaner air, and the best stargazing in Morocco. December–January is the calmest booking window apart from the Christmas rush.

March and April: spring light and warm days

Spring brings warm days (up to 30°C by afternoon), wonderful light, and after rare rains, brief wildflowers across the desert floor. The trade-off is wind: the Chergui sandstorm season runs mainly from late March through May, though storms usually pass within hours. Book camps early — this is the busiest window of the year.

May and September: the transition months

Both months are workable if you keep to the cool hours. May is hot by the afternoon and windier; September is still warm but easing. Mornings and evenings remain beautiful — perfect for a sunrise camel trek and early departure.

June to August: only for heat lovers

Summer in the deep south is extreme: daytime highs frequently exceed 40°C and can push past 45°C. Treks are limited to sunrise and sunset hours, and the desert is genuinely empty. Prices are at their lowest, but unless you are truly heat-tolerant, October to April is the wiser choice.

The monthly quick reference

  • January–February: clear, quiet, cold nights. Best for stargazers who pack warm (low–medium crowds).
  • March–April: warm, photogenic, busier. Watch for spring sandstorms (high crowds).
  • May: early-season heat build-up; morning treks (medium).
  • June–August: extreme heat; empty dunes; lowest prices (very low).
  • September: warm but easing; a good late-season window (medium).
  • October–November: the autumn sweet spot — ideal light, calm air (high for good reason).
  • December: mild days, cold nights, Christmas rush, then quiet (high at the holidays).

Frequently asked questions

What is the single best month to visit the Sahara in Morocco?

Many guides would say October: warm days, cool nights, low wind, golden light and manageable crowds. November, March and April are nearly as good.

Is summer a bad time to visit the desert?

It is the most challenging season — regular 40°C+ days — but doable if you trek at sunrise and sunset and rest through the middle of the day.

Is winter too cold for a desert night?

No, it is one of the most rewarding seasons. Nights can touch 0°C, so you pack proper layers — in return you get the clearest skies and the quietest dunes all year.
